Worlds Apart
The Worlds Apart wines are some of the most delicious and interesting things to come across our tasting bench so far this year. Louis Schofield's wide-ranging stable of SA creations are deeply thought out, eye-catching, energetic and very reasonably priced.
Louis is a man of many hats in the wine game. A former retailer, wine bar owner (Hellbound Wine Bar in Adelaide is a must-visit if you're looking for good chat and great vino) and eventually found his way into the cellar of Taras Ochota.
Louis worked alongside Taras for years, tinkering away in the Adelaide Hills on the Ochota Barrels creations and in the process piecing together his own winemaking ethos until he launched his own project, Worlds Apart, in 2017.
He and his wife Hannah are fascinated with flavour and balance. Hannah, an accomplished Adelaide chef, has a keen eye for how these elements interplay. Striking a balance between sweet/savoury, keeping freshness whilst not sacrificing flavour - her influence comes through in each of the Worlds Apart wines.
Louis' winemaking approach is one of minimal intervention, not dogmatically natural, but leaning that way. It's a 'less is more' approach, more or less. And the resulting wines are moreish, textural, bright and downright delicious to drink.
We loved the lightness of his reds - the "Blue Eyes" Gamay is a pure joy to drink - brightly lit and blue-fruited, it's as loveable a red as you're going to find. Likewise, the shapely Nero and Shiraz from McLaren Vale and his chillable/smashable Up On The Roof Light Red feel like wines built for a younger generation of wine lovers, who want substance along with their style. Throw in a cracking Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc and thirst-quenching Rose and you're off to the races.
If you haven't been introduced to the Worlds Apart label, you're missing the emergence of one of South Australia's must-watch wine projects.
